Zeqiang Fang / 2022-06-04

After reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey), I construct a personal insight to understand this book. Combining other insights from Gloria Gao, I rewrote the notes.

“Inside-out appoarch”

Working on our inside part of ourselves

Overview of Habits

1-3 Private Victories Self-mastery, the essence of our character growth

4-6 Public Victories Cooperation and communication with others

7 A continuous improvement that embodies all of the previous 6 habits

Habit 1 Be Proactive

We need to take accountability of our own actions.

Problem Recognisation

  1. Direct control ourself’s behaviour

  2. Indiect control other people behaviour

  3. No control do nothing about like our past Focus on the problem with our circle of influence!

Work on our weakness! -> Liberating!

Habit 2 Begin with the End in Mind

“A personal mission statement focuses on what you want to be (character), and to do, (contributions and achievements), and on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based.” — Stephen Covey

Personal Mission Statement: - character - contributions and achievements - principles

Changeless principles within us help to handle with constantly changing world! Stay true who we are

“Principle-centered”

Write down “Role of our life”

Take me for example

Roles Goals
Student Study hard
Intern Work life balance
Friend Expand circle and maintance the relationship
Spouse keep understand and improve our own experience
Individual Shape a growing mind

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Time Management Martix

Urgent Not Urgent
Important Quadrant 1: Crises,Deadline Quadrant 2: Long term planning
Not important Quadrant 3 Quadrant 4

In tradtional way, Quadrant 1 & 3(Urgent) are the most frequently taught to us!

Important but not urgent part, I need to work seriously these years (such as job skills)

Methodology:

Habit 4: Think win-win

Six Paradigms of Human Interactions

Our Character

  1. Integrity 正直
  2. Maturity 成熟
  3. Abundance Mentality (there is plenty out there and there is enough for everyone)

Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood

Empathetic Listening:

  1. Micmic Content

repeat exactly what other people said

  1. Rephrase

make sure we understand that correctly

  1. Reflect feeling

  2. Rephrase the content + Reflect feeling

Habit 6 Synergize

The key to synergize is to value our differences. It is not beneficial to have people agree with you all the time. You need to have people to give you constructive criticism to help you grow.

Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw; Growth

4 Dimensions

Mind of the growth
